  2. SURA’s Mission: To advance nuclear physics, information technology, and facilitate better understanding of coastal and environmental phenomena that impact our lives. Super-Regional Modeling Testbed

Recommended by the IOOS Modeling and Analysis Steering Team (Mooers, MAST Chair) • The testbed will allow scientists to share models, observations and tools needed to elucidate, prioritize and ultimately link models so they can be used in an interoperable manner.   • The objectives are to: • Evaluate and improve research models; • Evaluate/improve models already in operational use; • Assess system performance of models; • Develop a blueprint, and facilitate the transition of promising models/tools/metrics to Federal operational centers; Super-Regional Modeling Testbed

  4. …....at a glance • $4 million grant from NOAA, through IOOS, to SURA • One-year demonstration project to create a testbed to evaluate models and improve marine predictions of coastal inundation and hypoxia • 64 individuals, 20 Universities, Industry and direct involvement by the primary Federal operational Centers • Goal: to determine “best practices” for comparing models, identify the metrics, and develop a blueprint for transition to operations Super-Regional Modeling Testbed

Inundation testbed for the Gulf of Mexico IT Support for Super Regional Coastal Modeling Test Bed • SURA has secured High Performance Computing resource allocations on TeraGrid (NSF) and LONI systems (500,000 service units to date) and has assisted researchers with initial access. The Testbed teams are working together to improve models that forecast inundation and hypoxia for the Atlantic and Gulf coasts – and will be ready to transfer the “lessons learned” to address new environmental research questions and to expand existing knowledge to new geographic regions.
