  1. SPARTAN NUTRIENT CYCLE CARD a guide for dairy farm nutrient flow management

  2. The Spartan Nutrient Cycle Card is provided to help you manage the flow and recycling of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) through your dairy farm. By balancing the flow of nutrient imports and exports across your farm boundary, efficient nutrient use can be maximized and accumulation of nutrients in soil or risk of nutrient loss can be minimized.

  3. A point on the farm where nutrients are realized, stored, or transferred and where there is a potential for nutrient loss. Critical Control Points requiring efforts to optimize nutrient use. Each CCP has a corresponding checklist on the card reverse. Export of nutrients, products, or other matter across farm boundary and off the farm. Import of nutrients, product, or other matter across farm boundary on to the farm. Natural movement of nutrients through the farm cycle, such as from rations to animals. Symbols on the Cycle

  4. Take home points • Valuable nutrients N, P, and K flow through a dairy farm and across its boundaries. • There are 4 points in the farm cycle at which controlling nutrient flow is critical. • Following the guidelines outlined on the Nutrient Cycle Card can help balance flow of nutrients, maximize efficiency, and minimize accumulation of nutrients in soil and risk of nutrient loss.
