2. As it was a beautiful sunny day, Pippa decided to go on a journey. She had packed her bag very carefully. In it she put… food torch compass teddy books drink

3. Pippa jumped into her tiny boat and set sail. She was sitting and relaxing when all of a sudden - BUMP! The boat had crashed into a rock. Pippa looked at her boat and saw a huge hole. The boat had begun to sink. “Oh no!” she said. But just at that moment she spotted a tiny island in the distance. Pippa decided to swim to the island where she would be safe.

4. Pippa crawled up the beach. She was very tired. As she looked up, however, she saw a terrifying giant stomping towards her.

5. Pippa jumped up and looked for somewhere to hide, but it was too late. She grabbed Cinderella out of her bag and started to shake the book. The Fairy Godmother tumbled out of the story and landed on the sand next to Pippa. Cinderella

6. “Please help me,” Pippa said. “There’s an angry giant racing this way.” The Fairy Godmother looked up the beach and quickly waved her magic wand. The giant stopped stomping and looked down at himself. He was wearing the most beautiful ball gown. A smile spread across his face and he began to dance. He danced all the way along the beach and back into the forest.

7. “Thank you,” Pippa said. The Fairy Godmother smiled then dashed back into the storybook. “That was close,” Pippa thought. She decided that the beach was not a very safe place to stay. She walked over to the edge of the forest and hid behind a small bush. Cinderella

8. She was just about to find a sandwich to eat when she heard a quiet growling sound. Pippa turned to see what was making the noise then – CRACK – she stood on a stick. The growling came closer and closer. She could see a big, bad wolf approaching.

9. “Come out, little girl,” he snarled. “I know where you are and I’m ready for lunch.” Pippa grabbed Little Red Riding Hood from her bag and shook the book until the woodcutter fell out of the pages and landed on the forest floor beside her. Little Red Riding Hood

10. “The wolf’s going to eat me for lunch,” Pippa said. “Don’t worry,” said the woodcutter, and he jumped out from behind the bush. The wolf saw the woodcutter’s shiny axe and began to run. The woodcutter chased the wolf back into the forest and far away, before climbing back into his story book. Little Red Riding Hood

11. Pippa was very frightened after meeting the giant and the wolf and was desperate to get home. “I know,” she said, and took The Little Mermaid out of her bag. She shook the pages and out fell Ariel. “Ariel, can you help me?” Pippa asked. “I need to get home.” The Little Mermaid

12. “Of course,” said Ariel, and she held onto Pippa’s hand and they swam home. “Thank you,” said Pippa. Ariel waved goodbye and jumped back into her story. Pippa was pleased to be home, happily ever after. The Little Mermaid

13. Pippa’s Journey Notes for Teachers: I shared this story (which I wrote myself) after reading 'Beware of the storybook wolves' by Lauren Childs with my class. It was part of a unit of literacy work on traditional tales with a character focus. It was taught to my year 1/2 class. The outcome for the unit of work was that the children should choose characters from known stories to help a main character overcome villains whilst on an adventure. We shared my story and compared the idea with that of Lauren Childs then discussed other characters Pippa could have shaken out of a book to help her on the island. The children then role-played different events in the story and also began to create their own through role-play and then hot-seating. I have also included the story outline which I used with my lower ability children as a guided writing activity and the story plan guide which the rest of the class used to help them to create their role play and ultimately their story.
