Accountant • Accountants prepare an examine financial records for businesses. • They insure that financial records are accurate and that taxes are paid properly and on time. • They assess financial operations and work to help ensure that organizations run efficiently. • Most accountants work full time • One in five accountants work about 40 hours per week. • Longer hours are obtained typically at certain times of the year, such as the end of budget year of during tax season.

  3. How to become an Accountant? What are the wages? • Most employers require a candidate to have: • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. • Certification within a specific field of accounting improves job • Many accountants become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) • The median annual wage of an accountant was about • $61,690 per year • $29.66 per hour

Job outlook and competition • Employment of accountants is expected to grow 16 percent from 2010 to 2020. • This is about as fast as the average for all occupations . • The demand for this type of occupation is expected to increase in response to the recent financial crises and subsequent financial regulation.

Pharmacist • Pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients and offer advice on their safe use. • Pharmacists work environment is in pharmacies, including those in grocery and drug stores. • They can also work in hospitals and clinics. • The median pay of a pharmacist in 2010 is about • $53.64 per hour • $111,570 per year

  7. What does it take to become a pharmacist? • Pharmacists must have a • Doctor of Pharmacy (Phar.D.) • Four year professional degree • Also, they must be licensed • Which requires passing two exams

  8. Job outlook • Employment of pharmacists is anticipated to increase by 25 percent from 2010 to 2020 • Faster than the average for all occupations • Number of jobs, 2010: 274,900 • Employment change: 69,700

Unions for Pharmacists • NPhA (National Pharmacist Association): • Came into existence in 1986 • Purpose: To Securing of economic advances • “advancing and strengthening the rights of workers to bargain collectively” • “cooperating with and assisting, by moral, monetary or other means” • Helps secure better working hours, good working conditions, through organization and utilization of others laws • UFCW(United Food and Commercial Workers Union) • Facing growing pressure to hit financial targets and working conditions that need improvement • Their goal is to create an environment where they can do their jobs to the best of their ablilities

  10. Physician • Physicians diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses in patients. Physicians examine patients, take medical histories, prescribe medications, and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. • Many physicians work in: • private offices • clinics • are often helped by a small staff of nurses and other administrative workers. • Almost more physicians: • complete at least 4 years of undergraduate school • 4 years of medical school • 3 to 8 years of internship or residency depending on their specialty

Wage and job outlook • Wages of a physician is one of the highest of all occupations. • According to the Medical Group Association • Physicians practicing primary care received total median annual compensation of $202,392 • Physicians practicing in median specialties received total median annual compensation of 356,885 in 2010. • Employment of physicians is expected to grow by 24 percent from 2010 to 2020, • Faster than average of all occupations • Job prospect should be good in rural and low-income areas • This occupation can not be outsourced because of the need of doctors and their importance to the people and their health.

  12. Unions The UAPD (Unions of American Physicians and Dentists) was found by a private physician in 1972. Over the last forty years the UAPD has grown into the largest union representing licensed doctors in the United States. The UAPD is proud to bring the strength of the labor movement to the aid of working doctors in the interest of better healthcare for all. “The Doctors Council is the largest union of attending doctors in New York’s public sectors; it purpose is to make group presentations of physicians, including those employed at hospitals, practice groups, medical colleges and elsewhere.”

  13. Competition and technology Physicians and hospitals have traditionally had interdependent relationships; however, market forces and recent technology advances have weakened hospital-physician relations, pushing hospitals and physicians to become competitors. This is because some physicians decide to drift away from hospitals and become owners of their own clinics or private clinics and cause rivalry against the other hospitals.
