  3. 1. Ionic Bonding 2. Ions – what are they? 3. An atom that has an electric charge 3. When it loses electrons, it becomes positive 3. when it gains electrons it becomes negative

  4. 2. Ionic bonds – what are they? 3. A compound formed as a result of the attraction between positive and negative ions 3. Electrons are either gained or lost creating a positive or negative charge 3. Ionic compound – what is it? 4. A compound that consists of positive and negative ions

  5. 2. Chemical Formulas 3. Chemical formula – what is it? 4. combination of symbols that shows the ratio of elements in a compound 4. MgCl2= 1 Mg and 2 Cl 3. Formulas 4. Ionic bonds form so the charge of the compound becomes neutral

  6. 2. Naming ionic compounds 3. The name of the positive ion is 1st 3. The name of the negative ion is 2nd 3. Example 4. NaCl = Sodium Chloride 3. Single names = -ide 3. If polyatomic = -ate or –ite 4. ex : NH4No3 = Ammonium nitrate

  7. 2. Properties of Ionic Compounds 3. Hard, brittle solids with high melting points 3. When melted or dissolved in water, they conduct electricity 3. Can form crystals as solids 3. Electrical conductivity = flow of charged particles.

  8. Practice Time Directions : in your notebook on the LEFT page, show how the following molecules would bond together. Be sure to label the charges. Can you guess the name? • KCl • CaCl2 • K2O
