Implement best practices to support student needs as identified by assessments. • Focus on the identification of main and supporting ideas in all reading and writing tasks, using two column note format across all disciplines. • Employ open response questions across all content areas to provide further practice on this writing skill. • Use dialectical journals in ELA with narrative and informational texts to increase student/text engagement. • Increase amount of notification text read in ELA classes.

  9. Math Improvement Action Steps Melrose High • Implement Pearson Common Core textbook series aligned to new Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Provide professional development and support implementation of the program • Use the digital resources from the new textbooks to support learning in school and at home. • Analyze the MCAS data as a department to identify areas of strength and weakness to inform curriculum and instruction. • Explicitly teach students strategies to answer open response questions including DICE method of problem solving. • Vertically align the Statistics and Probability Domain in grades 6 – 12.

  11. Key Points Affecting Instruction and Curriculum • In Biology, students performed better on Cell Biology, Ecology and Genetics as compared to Chemistry of Life and Evolution/Biodiversity • Continued work is needed in the area of open response items particularly among High Needs students

Science Improvement Action Steps Melrose High • Biology teachers will continue to meet in data teams to analyze MCAS data as well as common assessments with the goal of adjusting curriculum and instruction in response to student needs. • Provide direct instruction to students in identifying key ideas and supporting details from text and responding to written prompts that are content-specific. • Encourage the use of strategies that reinforce the acquisition of content-specific vocabulary.
