  1. Vector Components This activity uses an example of a ship and wind for students to work out vector quantities. Students will determine the COG (Course Over Ground) of the ship when given the wind speed and direction and the ship speed and direction. You can also add third components (current) if you choose to.

  2. Boat A Boat B Boat A = 2.3 knots Wind = 1.2 knots Boat B = .5 knots Wind = 2.1 knots Boat C Boat D Boat C = 3.5 knots Wind = .9 knots Boat D = 5.6 knots Wind = 3.5 knots

  3. Directions: On the compasses on the back you are given vector quantities for wind speed and boat speed. • Find the true direction of the movement and the speed of the boat. (Hint: add the components of each vector together) • Draw an appropriate sized and directed arrow on the compass to represent the added vectors. **Be sure to show all work.

  4. Answers: These vector problems are solved like any others however the answer for the angle given is in reference to the compass. 0° being North and 180° being South. • 2.86 knots; 186.02° from North • 1.6 knots; 180° from North • 4.39 knots; 202.07° from North • 7.55 knots; 150.82° from North *Please note that student answers may vary slightly as they will need to estimate the proper angle to use. The angles used for the answers are below: • Boat = 200° Wind = 135° • Boat = 0° Wind = 180° • Boat = 200 ° Wind = 210 • Boat = 125° Wind = 195°

  5. Notes to Teacher • Black arrow represents the direction and magnitude of the boat and yellow arrow represents the direction and magnitude of the wind. • All answers are relative to 0° North.
