Closely Related Animals!!!! • Salamanders are in the same family as toads and frogs but they belong to the order caudate because they have tails • They may often be mistaken for lizards they differ in that they do not have scales, ears or claws. • Some species of salamanders may only have a single pair of legs and others have legs that are reduced, they look a little like eels.

Habitat • Over 400 species of salamanders found throughout the world, around 140 are found in north America. • Their habitats are varied, ranging damp forests to fast-flowing creeks. • The aquatic habitats of salamanders range from temporary pools formed after heavy rains to more permanent bodies of water such as rivers or streams. • The type of salamanders known as a hellbender prefers large rivers , while the tiger salamanders seek out warm ponds for their habitat.

Feeding • A salamander’s diet largely depends on its environment. • Salamanders that live on land are carnivores with long sticky tongs like their relatives frogs • They creep up on prey until they are in striking distance and then lunge forward, shooting their tongue out to catch it • salamanders eat a wide variety of prey which is… • Spiders • Worms • Insects

Moovement.. • Their long, strong tails are flat to help sirens swim like a fish, with the tail flapping from side to side • salamander species develop four legs as adults, with fleshy toes at the end of each foot. • A salamander’s hind legs grow more slowly than its front legs. • All four legs on a salamander are so short that its belly drags on the ground. • The exception to this is the sirens they don’t have hind legs at all!
