  2. Mali’s Rise of Power • The rise of power began with Sundiata, Mali’s first strong leader. • Living on the river helped the people of Mali because it had fertile soil, and it allowed them to control trade.

  3. Beginnings of the Empire • He won back his country’s independence. • He then conquered many other kingdoms, like Ghana.

  4. Improvements in Mali • Sundiata took over salt and gold trades. • He cleared new farmlands for agriculture and introduced cotton.

  5. Consolidation of Power • Sundiata increased his authority by taking power away from local leaders called mansas, religious and political leaders. • Sundiata died in 1255. • Later rulers were Muslim, unlike Sundiata.
