  1. 5. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? By Jack Wint-Reilly

  2. Camera • For our thriller opening, we used a Sony Handycam to film the footage. We also used this camera to film our preliminary task. Each member of the group acquired new skills from using the camera and we all had our own chance to film part of the film. We encountered a number of problems whilst filming regarding the other equipment we received with the camera. I personally managed to break the tripod midway through our filming task which had to be replaced. We also lost our camera bag on the first day of filming that included our camera cable, charger and extra tapes. However, we managed to overcome many of these issues with help from our teacher and replacing the tripod. When we had finished our filming, we imported the footage into the computer to be edited.

  3. Editing • To edit our film, we used the editing software ‘Final Cut Pro X’. The editing process was one of the most important parts of producing our thriller opening. Within Final Cut Pro, we pieced together all the hours of footage to create our two minute opening. We did not use many visual effects on our video and mainly relied on the footage being of good quality and making sure all the different cuts were sharp and accurate. • We encountered some minor problems whilst editing such as minor continuity errors, sound distortion and some footage being to long to fit in our two minute opening. However, this was all fixed by bringing down audio levels and fast cuts that work as an illusion to the viewer, unless if they decide to watch very carefully.

  4. Music • To create the music for our thriller opening, we used sequencing software Logic Pro 9. The music was very basic, merely consisting of a synthesiser and a series of different random drum and percussive instruments. To get the desired effect, I edited the factory preset of all the sounds adding effects and changing the timbres of the instruments. The music played a big part within the thriller opening as it added to the atmosphere of the film. When creating the music, we merely played the film with Logic open and made the music through improvisation.

  5. Youtube • The last step for our thriller opening was to upload the final piece onto Youtube. Youtube proved to be very helpful in the creating of our thriller as it gave us access to thousands of different clips for free from other thriller films that we could take reference from. Youtube is also a great tool for sharing our video as it makes it accessible to the other groups in our class for peer assessment. Youtube could also be a good site to allow our audience to view the film. The internet is an easy and free form of viral advertising that is mainly accessed by younger people. • One disadvantage of youtubeis that it slightly deterred the quality of the film. Our thriller opening could have been of higher quality it was rendered as a larger file. When the file then went onto youtube, the overall quality of the film changed, resulting in the final product appearing grainy.
