  1. Possible Sr. ProjectsfromMichael Scarpulla Neil E. Cotter ECE Department UNIVERSITYOFUTAH necotter@ece.utah.edu

  2. Solar Cells • Simulations and calculations oflight trapping in nanostructuredultra-thin Si solar cells

  3. Thin Films • Matlab simulation of thin film growth - interaction of deposited atoms with dislocation stress fields (we have the dislocation part already)

  4. Laser Pwr Supply • Fixing / re-engineering / building a pulsed power supply for a high-powered laser to give tunable ns pulses

  5. Laser Simulation • Matlab simulation of 1D laser-solid interactions - we have this partially done, need to integrate optical model with heat flow routine

  6. Laser Simulation • COMSOL simulations of 3D laser interactions with polycrystalline semiconductors

  7. Plasmonic Oscillators • COMSOL simulations of plasmonic phase-change oscillators

  8. Solar Cells • Building a system and protocols for measuring resistivity vs. temperature for thin film solar materials (hardware + Labview)

  9. Photoluminescence • Building a photoluminescence system (hardware + Labview)

  10. Data Analysis • Data analysis for admittance spectroscopy

  11. Solar Cells • Simulation of operation of thin film solar cells incorporating Cu2ZnSnS4 (electrostatics, CV, I-V)

  12. LabView • Other hardware + Labview integration projects to implement optoelectronic characterization techniques

  13. Schrodinger Eqn • Simulations of semiconductor band structures and vibrational modes (solving Schrodinger equation for 3D crystals using modern ab-initio packages

  14. Solar Cells • Characterize solar cells on the AM1.5 and IQE and then follow up with detailed electrical studies aiming to elucidate defect states

  15. Thermal Evaporator • Building up, testing, and using a thermal evaporator to deposit thin layers of sulfur and selenium for improving the quality of Cu2ZnSnS4 solar cells - could use 2 students.
