  1. Societal Applications For Enhanced Readiness S A F E R “Keeping America SAFER by understanding and integrating societal impacts into NWS products and services; to enhance public awareness and readiness associated with weather, water, and climate.“ Western Region is kicking off the SAFER program by holding a week long workshop MAY 17TH - 21ST for WFO/RFC focal points in Salt Lake City, UT Workshop participants will be introduced to numerous field experts in social science, techniques, tactics, and tools in applying social science practices, and project examples demonstrating process and results. After the workshop, WR offices will more effectively work with external partners (academic, stakeholders and primary customers, agencies, etc.) to integrate societal impact philosophies and improve the effectiveness of NWS products and services. The SAFER Program is intended to fully compliment Decision Support Services (DSS). It is designed to blend social science into our strong knowledge base in physical science in order to best carry out our mission.  For more information on Western Region’s SAFER program contact: Craig Schmidt or Darone Jones at WRH/MSD (801) 524-4000
