  2. Ocean Water • It is thought that volcanoes formed the oceans • When ancient volcanoes erupted they gave off water that later condensed and filled low areas called basins

  3. Ocean Water • 70% of earth is covered by oceans • Oceans contain salts from rivers and groundwater • These salts are made of calcium, magnesium and sodium from rocks and minerals • Sodium and chloride are the most abundant elements

  4. Ocean Water • Chlorine gas is added by volcanoes • Sodium and Chlorine combine to create salt (NaCl) • Halite is the name given to the salt we use on our food • Desalination is the process of removing salt from ocean water

  5. Ocean Currents • There are two types of ocean currents • Surface currents powered by the wind • Density currents caused when more dense (heavier) seawater sinks under less dense (lighter) seawater

Ocean Currents • The Gulf Stream that causes our weather is a surface current • The Coriolis Effect also effects surface currents • The Coriolis Effect is caused by the rotation of the earth • If you threw a ball straight into the air, and it stayed up there long enough, it would not come back to you

  9. Ocean Currents • Surface currents are important because they distribute heat around the globe • Upwelling circulates cold water from deep below to the ocean surface

  11. Ocean Waves and Tides • Crest is the highest point of a wave • Trough is the lowest point of a wave

  12. Ocean Waves and Tides • Wind causes waves when it blows across the water • Even if the wind stops blowing a wave can continue on to shore

  13. Ocean Waves and Tides • A tide is the rise and fall of the sea level and it caused by a short wave that covers a HUGE area • The earth and moon together cause most tides, but the sun also plays a small part • It is the gravitational pull of the moon and sun that causes tides
