CVD 2014 Schedule – Wednesday, March 12 • All Events are on Capitol Hill • 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: AIAA CVD Breakfast, Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2325 • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: CVD Meetings • Please note that there are no Tuesday events. Materials distribution will take place on Capitol Hill. Each team will receive CD-ROMS of the Key Issues and Congressional Directories. It is very important that each team provide Duane Hyland (Duaneh@aiaa.org) with an accurate count of meetings BEFORE Wednesday, March 12, so that the proper amount of materials are brought to the Hill. Moving large quantities of materials on the Hill will be impossible. Arrangements can also be made to pick up materials in advance of Wednesday by contacting Duane as well.

Know Who You are Talking With • The Member • Chief of Staff/Administrative Assistant: Top Advisor to Member • Legislative Director: Analyzes Pros and Cons of Policy Proposals • Legislative Assistant: Reports to Legislative Director on Policy in the Assistant’s Policy Area. • Legislative Correspondent: Reports to Legislative Director on Policy

  10. Making the Most of CVD • Research – Know your Audience • Select – Select the Issue that fits them the best • Plan – Select the speaker to present the issue • Polish – Make sure the presentation is well thought out and prepared.

  11. Successful Advocacy – At the Meeting • Present – present your advocacy in the most polished professional way possible. • Focus – Pay full attention to the message delivery. No Cell Phones; No private side conversations. • Respond – Be responsive to questions and have supporting data handy. • Thank – Express thanks for the time, etc.

  12. Successful Advocacy – After the Meeting • Follow up – Provide any requested information in a timely manner. • Thank – Send a thank you note, it can’t hurt. • Report – Report to AIAA on your visits • Reflect – Reflect on what went right and wrong, and how to make CVD 2011 better!

At All Times Be Respectful and Focused • Remember we are here at CVD for AIAA’s Advocacy – Not YOUR company’s, project’s or personal cause. • Make Sure to Turn These Things Off While Advocating for AIAA– Personal Electronics/Personal Political Views/Personal Views or Rivalries with Competing Companies/Programs/Agencies

  20. 2014 R1 CVD Attendee Roles & Responsibilities • State captains responsible for setting appointments with Congressional offices for each state delegation • State captains will communicate overall schedule to CVD attendees registered for each state • Including initial meeting time and location • Coordinate meeting participation and logistics • CVD attendees should review the key issues and prepare a local anecdote that relates to one or more of the key issues • CVD attendees should also note with the state captain which Congressional offices they’d like to visit • At a minimum list home district

Region 1 2014 CVD Info • State Captain coordination telecon scheduled for Monday, 2/24 • Review appointment lists • Determine needs of each state delegation • Considering evening meet-up the night before, location TBD • Region I goals for 2014 CVD participation • Minimum of one member from each section attend CVD • Visit 10 out of 13 states in Region I • Visit 50% of Congressional offices in Region I • Keeping metrics for CVD participation • Track section participation, total # of region I members attending, and percent coverage of Congressional offices • To support metrics, participants report on which offices were visited

Public Policy Activities within Region 1 • Many sections host local visits with Congressional representation • Usually occurs when Congress is in recess • Builds up relationships established at CVD • Examples: • Direct presentations on a key issue topic • Panel discussions • Meet & greets • Facility tours • Nominations for AIAA Public Service Award • The Public Service Award honors a person outside the aerospace community who has shown consistent and visible support for national aviation and space goals • Suggest topics for AIAA sponsored Key Issues • Public Policy Committee reaches out to membership every year in June for input in crafting the CVD key issues for the following year
