  3. What is a Preposition? • A preposition relates a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence. • Always has an object. • The object is a noun or pronoun that follows the preposition.

Volunteer ExamplesUnderline preposition and circle the object. • Dogs have been trained to perform a wide variety of jobs. • Watchdogs protect their owners’ homes from burglars. • Guide dogs help their owners across the street. • Police dogs can smell drugs in suitcases. • Hunting dogs can lead hunters to wild game. • Dogs are good companions for older people who may be lonely.

  5. What is a prepositional phrase? • A preposition and its object is always related to another word in the sentence. • It modifies the word the same way an adjective or adverb would.

Volunteer ExamplesUnderline the prepositional phrase. • Last night I had a dream about a strange castle. • As I remember, I was walking down a long hall. • On either side were beautiful statues. • Suddenly, a little man with a long beard called my name. • He asked me to follow him through the wall.
