  2. New Rock from old Rock There are many physical changes happening right now on and in Earth that change rocks constantly. Rocks are changing all the time.

  3. Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are heated or squeezed but are not melted. Metamorphic- to change form. Metamorphic rocks change forms from exposure to great temperatures and pressure underneath the Earth’s crust

  4. Types of Change Rocks New metamorphic rock can form from any existing type of rock: Igneous, Sedimentary, or Metamorphic. There are two different types of metamorphic rock: Foliated and Nonfoliated. The difference between foliated and nonfoliated metamorphic rock is the texture.

  5. Foliated • Foliated rocks have visible layers or elongated grains of minerals. • Foliated - “leafy”. • Have parallel layers of different-colored minerals. • Examples: • Slate, gneiss, phyllite,

  6. Nonfoliated • Nonfoliatedrocks do not have distinct layers or bands. • More even in colors. • Examples: • Quartzite • marble • soapstone

  7. The Rock Cycle The Rock Cycle describes how different kinds of rock are related to one another and how rocks change from one type to another.
