  2. “Nice to meet ya shank… welcome to the Glade.”(3)

  3. etting The Glade The glade is where all of the Gladers live. It is about three times the size of a football field. It is surrounded by a large confusing maze, made of extremely tall stone walls. On all four sides of the Glade there are openings in the walls leading into the maze. Every night the stone walls surrounding the Glade move, closing the large gaps in the walls. Every morning the large gaps open again. There are four sections of the Glade. The Homestead, a large poorly built, crooked building where most of the Gladers sleep, is in the northwest corner. The Deadheads (the woods) is located in the southwest corner. The grave yard is in the back of the Deadheads. Spread across the northeast quarter of the Glade is the farm area. The animals are in the southeast corner. The fields and fruit trees are located in the northeast corner. In the middle of the large Glade the box (elevator) comes up to drop of any newbies or supplies. South of the box is the map room. It is made of rough concrete blocks. There are no windows and there is no other entrance or exit other than the large iron doors. The map room is where all of the runners go after each day in the maze to record what the maze looks like. The animal pens and barns are located in the southeast corner, along with the Blood House. The Blood House is where they slaughter the animals for food. It is always sunny during the day and the stars always come out at night, except for about half way through the book. The day Teresa came out of her coma, the sky turned a grey color and sunrise never occurred, it was almost like the sun totally disappeared. The sky was the same grey color at night as well. It never rains at the glade, the gladers get all of their water from the pipes. S

  5. The Maze At least 20 feet across, the large gaps in the stone walls are the entrances to the maze. The doors are named according to there direction, there is the North Door, the East Door, the South Door, and the West Door. Every night the doors close, and in the morning the doors open again, making an awful crunching, grinding sound. Every time the large walls move the whole ground shakes, like an earthquake. The walls of the maze shift every night as well, making it close to impossible to find a way out. Thick ivy lines the tall maze walls. The runners use the ivy to remember which way they came from. There are eight sectors of the maze. One runner is assigned a sector to explore each day. Each day, after they have explored there sector, the runner goes to the map room and draws the sector they explored. They also compare the different drawings to the others from the previous days. Each sector of the maze is different, if you stack all of the drawings, for each sector, from each day, on top of each, they create a letter. The different letters form different words, in order to exit the maze, you have to type those words into a computer inside the Griever hole. Deep in the maze, there is a cliff that is used to banish people. Over the cliff is the Griever hole. If you get stuck in the maze at night there are creatures called Grievers that come out and try to kill you. Although it is more common for the Grievers to come out at night, they still come out during the day every once and a while. There is no way to exit the maze, there is no solution. The whole maze was just a test. The only way out is through the Griever hole. etting S

  7. The Box (the elevator) All of the people in the Glade came up in this box. Every month or so, supplies come up in the box as well. The gladers can make requests for the supplies they want to be sent up in the box. But they don’t get everything they ask for. Teresa was the last person to come up in the box. etting S Thomas in the “Box”

  8. Griever Hole The Griever hole is the place the Grievers hide out. Through the Griever hole is the only way out of the maze. The entrance to the Griever hole is just off of the edge of the cliff. It is only a few feet square. It is pitch black inside the Griever hole. It is a ten foot high stone cylinder. The Griever hole is damp, and covered in grimy, shiny oil. It stretches out for dozens of yards. The computer where they enter the code is down a tunnel. The screen of the computer is a light square of dull green, grimy glass. Beneath the screen is the keyboard. In order to get out of the maze, Teresa, Thomas, and Chuck had to enter the code into the computer. Down the long tunnel was the door to the exit. At the end of the tunnel was a long, slick black, metal chute covered in an oily goo. The goo smelled like burnt plastic and over used machinery. The tunnel is twisty and spiraled. The long tunnel finally ends and goes into the Creators observatory. etting S http://mazerunnerfandom.net/tag/griever/ Thomas fighting a Griever.

  9. Thomas Thomas is the second to last person to come to glade. He is one of the main characters in the book and a major character. He is a dynamic character and a protagonist. He is a Runner. Thomas has brown hair and is about 5’9. He is about 16 years old. Thomas is brave in so many ways. He risked his own life and went against the number one rule in the Glade (don’t go out into the maze as the doors are closing), to save two people who needed help. As the walls were closing for the night, he ran out into the maze to save Alby and Minho, not knowing if he was going to make it through the night. He is one of the first people to survive a night out in the maze. He is very good friends with Teresa and Chuck. Teresa and Thomas can talk to each other through there minds, telepathically. Thomas has a couple nick names. Teresa calls him Tom and Newt calls him Tommy. Many of the other Gladers call him newbie or greenie, although he isn't the newest one to come to the glade. Thomas purposely got stung by a Griever to go through the changing, to get his memories back. This allowed him to find a way out of the maze. This also allowed Thomas to remember other important things. He remembered that all of the Gladers are orphans being used in a big experiment. He remembered that the maze was just one big test. The purpose of the test was to find someone who was capable of beating the Flare. Thomas was the first Galder to ever kill a Griever. haracters C http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/markl?before=1343652563 Thomas

  10. Chuck Chuck is Thomas’ friend. He is a minor character in the book. Chuck is a protagonist and a static character. He works as a slopper. He is a young, short, pudgy kid only 12 or 13 years of age. Chuck has long brown hair that hangs over his ears, and goes down to the top of his shoulders. He has a flabby face and blue eyes. Chuck was the newbie until Thomas showed up. Chuck was Thomas’ first friend. He has an annoying but caring personality. He is also very talkative. Chuck is the one who found the button that said PUSH, opening the door and shutting down the Grievers. While the surviving Gladers are in the Creators observatory, Gally tries to kill Thomas by throwing a knife at him, but Chuck jumps in front of Thomas and dies instead. He sacrificed his own life for his best friend. Chuck haracters C http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1277218/Boy-12-tells-school-bullies-drove-anorexia-ate-just-50-calories-day.html

  12. Alby http://fantasyvsrealitymoviecasts.blogspot.com/2012/06/fantasy-maze-runner-ok-so-i-bet-some-of.html Alby Ably is the leader or Keeper of the Glade. He is a Minor character in the book. He is an antagonist and a dynamic character. He is about 17 years old. He is one of the oldest at the Glade. He has short, cropped hair and dark skin. His face is clean shaven. He never really smiles. Sometimes he has a slight smirk, but other than that, he has a permanent scowl on his face. Alby goes through the changing after he got stung by a “dead” griever. The griever didn’t intentionally sting him, it seemed like the griever just wanted to get away, but Alby was in its way. At the end of the book, Alby goes insane and sacrifices himself to the grievers. haracters C

  13. Newt http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/tmrnewt?before=1351621074 Newt Newt is the Second-in-Command of the Gladers. He is a minor character in the book. He is a protagonist and a dynamic character. He is good friends with Alby, and takes care of him after he gets stung by a Griever. While Teresa, Chuck, and Thomas were trying to type in the code, Newt was fighting the Grievers, trying to keep Thomas, Chuck, and Teresa safe so that they could enter the code successfully. haracters C

  14. Minho Minho is the Keeper of the Runners. He is a great runner because he is very fast. He is a major character in the book. Minho is a protagonist and a dynamic character. He is an Asian kid with short black hair and strong arms. He is a little bit older than Thomas. Minho is thoughtful, determined, he also has a temper. It is very easy to make Minho angry. He taught Thomas how to be a runner. He was one of the first Gladers to survive a night out in the maze. Minho was one of the Gladers that fought off the Grievers, so that Teresa, Chuck, and Thomas could enter in the code, so that they could leave the maze. haracters Minho C http://mazerunnerfandom.net/tag/minho/

  15. Creators http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/the-maze-runner?before=1342668936 a Griever created by the Creators The Creators are the people that created the Glade and the maze. The creators also program the Grievers. The creators are major characters in the book. They are an antagonist and a dynamic character. Eva Paige is the chancelor of the Creators. All of the Creators wear black coats over white shirts. On the coat, in big blue, capital letters, there logo, WICKED, is stitched over the right breast. The leader of the Creators is a woman. She wears black pants, and a button down white shirt with the logo, WICKED, stitched over her right breast. She has shoulder length brown hair, and a thin face with dark eyes. haracters C

  16. Imagery • “The dark skin of his face, which had been oddly pale just a minute earlier, had turned purple, his eyes rolled so far in their sockets they looked like glowing white marbles.” (172) • “The clearing was small, maybe thirty feet square, and covered with a thick layer of leafy weeds growing close to the ground. Thomas could see several clumsily prepared wooden crosses poking though this growth, their horizontal pieces looked to the upright ones with a splintery twine!” (68) • “A strong whiff of something burnt stung his nostrils; a stick mixture of over heated engines and charred flesh.”(127) • “She was thin, but not too small. Maybe five and a half feet tall, from what he could tell. She looked like she could be fifteen or sixteen years old, and her hair was tar black. But the thing that really stood out to him was her pale skin: pale, white as pearls.” (54) igurative Language F

  17. Foreshadowing • “Metal ground against metal; a lurching shudder shook the floor the floor beneath him. He fell down at the sudden movement and shuffled backward in his hands and feet, drops of sweat beating on his forehead despite the cool air. His back struck a hard metal wall; he slid along it until he hit the corner of the room. Sinking to the floor, he pulled his legs up tight against his body, hoping his eyes would soon adjust to the darkness.”(1) igurative Language F

  18. Simile • “Massive stone walls, hundreds of feet high, moving like sliding glass doors…”(28) igurative Language F

  19. Metaphor • “It was a bestial, lunatic cry, surely ripping the boy’s vocal cords to shreds.”(71) igurative Language F

  20. Alliteration • “Burning blue eyes…”(56) igurative Language F

  23. Plot Element-a component or element of the plot of a storyExample-An example of a plot element from The Maze Runner is when Chuck sees the red button under the keyboard that says PUSH and Teresa hits it, they hear a door open, and all of the Grievers shut down. This This occurred during the climax. lot P

  24. Rising Action • The rising action in The Maze Runner starts when Thomas came to the glade in a large metal box rising from the ground • Thomas meets his friend Chuck and all the other Gladers • Thomas sees Ben go through the changing. • Ben tries to kill Thomas in the Deadheads. • Teresa comes up to the Glade in the box. She was the last person to come to the glade. Ever. • Alby gets stung by a “dead” Griever • Thomas, Minho, and Alby survive a full night in the maze. • Alby goes through the Changing • The Sky turns Grey and Teresa wakes up. • The walls don’t close, so the Gladers are unprotected from the Grievers who take one Glader every night for about 6 nights. • The Glader's figure out that the drawings of the maze spell words. • Gally is killed by a griever when he jumps on top of one during his psychotic faze • Thomas purposely gets stung by a Griever and goes through the Changing. • Thomas wakes up from the Changing and figures out how to get out of the maze. He finds out that the maze was just some kind of test, and that all of the Gladers were orphans just being used in this test. The memories from the Changing were fading, so he wasn’t sure if this was totally true. • Thomas proposes the plan to the keepers during a Gathering, not all of the Gladers agree to the plan, some stay in the Glade while the rest of the Gladers fight in the maze, trying to escape the awful jail. lot P

  25. Climax • The Climax in TheMaze Runner starts when Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck go into the Griever hole to type in the code while the other Gladers are in the corridor leading to the cliff fighting the Grievers. • The Gladers were fighting the grievers to try and make a path for Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck to get to the edge of the cliff, to jump into the Griever hole. • Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck made it to the edge of the cliff and jumped into the Griever hole. • Thomas fights off a Griever when it comes into the hole, and kills it. • Chuck sees a red button under the keyboard that says PUSH and Teresa hits it , they hear a door open, and all of the Grievers shut down. • The surviving Gladers that were fighting the Grievers jump into the Griever hole. Then all of the survingGladers find where the door is, and go down a slimy slide, covered in Griever goo, the slide leads the Gladers to the Creators observatory. • While a woman is greeting the kids, Gally comes into the room from outside, and throws a knife right at Thomas. Chuck jumps in front of him and sacrifices his life. The knife hits him in the chest, killing him. • Thomas beats Gally . Chuck was one of Thomas’ best friends, so Thomas was very angry that Gally killed him. He already hated Gally, this just made Thomas hate him even more. • Right after the woman says ”All things happen for a reason.”(pg. 359), several men and women burst through the same door Gally came from. One man steps forward and shoots and kills the women • All of the Gladers leave the Creators observatory and go with the other men and women. lot P

  26. Falling Action • The falling action in The Maze Runner starts whenthe Gladers start walking to a bus. • The Gladers were almost onto the bus when a sick looking women tackles Thomas. She said “Gonna save us from the Flare!”(pg. 362). • A man pulls Thomas onto the bus and pushes the women out of the way • The women backs off . • The Gladers board the bus, Teresa sat next to Thomas, and the bus started moving. • While the bus is moving the women that tackled Thomas, runs in front of it and gets ran over. • A women sat in the seat across from Thomas and Teresa. Thomas asked her what was going on. She said it all started with the sun flares. She said that the sun flares are normal, but they weren't expected to be so big. They continued to spike higher and higher, until it was too late, and it wasn’t long before the heat slammed into earth. First thousands of people died instantly, and the satellites burned out. Millions more people died within days. Then the sickness came, it was impossible to control because the ecosystem fell apart. This awful sickness is called the Flare. The cure for the sickness is very expensive, so only the rich can afford it. • Thomas was reassured that the maze was just a test. He found out that the whole reason for the ultimate test was to find someone that was capable of finding a way to beat the Flare. lot P

  27. Conflicts • Society vs. Society: The Gladers are trying to solve the maze created by the Creators. The creators only made the maze to test the Gladers. They were seeing how long they would keep going, or if they would give up. The reason for the test was to find someone that was capable of finding a way to beat the Flare. • Society vs. Man The Gladers are trying to protect themselves against the Grievers. The Grievers are trying to kill the Gladers. The Grievers can kill as well as sting the Gladers. There is a serum that cures the Grievers sting, if you get the serum in time, you survive and go through the Changing, if not you will die. When the sky turned grey at the Glade and the walls didn’t close at night, the Grievers came to the Glade every night and killed one Glader at a time. • Man vs. Man Thomas and Gally do not get along. They hate each other. Gally hates Thomas for many reasons. He even threatened to kill Thomas. Thomas also hates Gally for many reasons. When Gally went through the Changing, he apparently remembered Thomas, but not in a good way. One of the nights the walls didn’t close in the Glade, Gally was taken by a Griever, everyone thought he was dead, but that wasn’t the case. When the surviving Gladers were in the Creators observatory, Gally appeared. He looked terrified. He seemed controlled by someone, but it wasn’t for sure, he threw a knife at Thomas, attempting to kill him, but Chuck jumped in front of Thomas and was killed instead. Thomas hated Gally even more after that because he killed one of his best friends. • Man vs. Self When Teresa first came to the Glade, Thomas felt like he knew her somehow. He didn’t want to believe that he knew her. Teresa knew that she knew him before her memory was swiped, but he still didn’t want to believe it. When Teresa was in a coma, Teresa talked to Thomas telepathically. He didn’t want to believe she was talking to him in his head. He eventually believed that he knew her before there memories were swiped, and that she could talk to him telepathically. He eventually could talk back to Teresa telepathically. lot P

  28. Theme and Resolution • The resolution in The Maze Runner is when all of the surviving Gladers get onto the bus, and are taken to a “safe house”. • They are assigned bunk beds, and fall asleep. Teresa is assigned to a totally different room because she is a girl. Although Thomas misses Teresa, he falls asleep smiling. • Everything was not totally solved though. The Flare was still existed, and the WICKED was not totally shut down. There are still many problems that need to be solved. heme and Resolution T

  29. Mood • When the keepers banished Ben into the maze for trying to kill Thomas, I felt sick to my stomach. • When Teresa first comes out of the box, and sits up with the note, I was scared that she was going to have a seizure and die. ood M
