Opioid abuse terminology(ASAM, APS and AAPM, 2001) • Addiction: Primary, chronic, neurobiological disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental influencing factors; behaviors include one or more of: impaired control over drug use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm, and craving • Physical dependence:State of adaptation manifested by a specific withdrawal syndrome produced by abrupt cessation, rapid dose reduction, decreasing blood level, and/or administration of an antagonist • Tolerance: State of adaptation where exposure to a drug induces changes that result in a diminution of one or more of the drug’s effects over time
