  1. ‘The same as you?’ is the Scottish Government’s policy about people with learning disabilities and family carers. It was launched in 2000.

  2. SCLD did some research to find out if ‘The same as you?’ had made things better for people with learning disabilities. People with learning disabilities were involved in planning the research. People with learning disabilities were on the research team.

  3. What we did in our research We looked at reports. We did interviews with 50 people with learning disabilities and 50 family carers across Scotland. We wrote some reports about what we found out.

  4. What we found out

  5. What we found out about employment • Not many people had a paid job (22%) • People with a paid job had 2 or 3 different jobs • People had paid and voluntary work • People want more hours and more opportunities • Adjustments and support help • Discrimination is a problem

  6. What we found out about education Some people who need support can find it hard to get this at school. Sometimes the planning around leaving school does not work well. Most of the people we spoke to had been to college. Sometimes college courses do not give people the skills they want.

  7. What we found out about health People went to their local doctor when they felt ill. People said they would go to the doctor or their support worker for health information. People need support to help them to eat healthily and to exercise.

  8. What we found out about choice and control Most people had been asked about what they want. Half of the people we spoke to had plans. People who have direct payments like them because they can choose their staff. Not many people knew about direct payments. People need better information!

  9. What carers told us • Carers need more information and support to help them through periods of change. • Carers’ assessments are not working well. • Most carers felt that families are not treated fairly. • Caring is still ‘a fight.’ • Carers are partners and are being involved.

  10. What will happen now Consultation – why we are here today! What do you think about what we found out? What do you think still needs to change? Tell us what you think!
