  4. History of PSTC 1995-96: Artwork/poster idea to raise funds for tigers 250/250 Challenge – Classes of ’76 & ‘81 Partnership with Dept. of Ecology/Ev.Bio. PSTC is Born! Summer 1996: Incorporated, established as 501.c.3 Summer 1997: First Trip: Sumatra after successful campaign raises $11,000+ 1999: Sumatra Dormitory 2000: Earth Day Run, Second trip: India

  5. Plight of Tigers • Lack of scientific data • Failure to control trade in tiger parts • Failure to control human impacts

  6. Field Studies by WCS • Habitat Quantification • Populations of Tigers derived from surveys • Backed by studies of food sources and other evidence • Assess Human Impacts • Support government actions

  7. Why PSTC? • Many “save the tiger” organizations • Wildlife Conservation Society • NFWF/ExxonMobil/Minnesota Zoo • World Wildlife Fund • 41 Organizations on the “5tigers.org” web site • Princeton alumni want to help • Princeton students want to help

  9. Four Students and Professor Andy Dobson visited established WCS research station Formal Habitat Study at WCS Way Canguk Research Station Sumatra Trip - 1997Bukit Barasin Selatan Nat’l Park • Habitat subsequently destroyed by fire • Research became priceless

  10. Runs for the Tiger • Four 5K/10K run/walks: 1996-1999 • Next scheduled: 14 April 2001 • $1,000 – $2,000 raised at each event

  11. India Introduction • Brenda Lin ‘01, Summer 1999 • Introduced student involvement in India – looked for future opportunities • Investigation of conservation efforts • Four national parks visited

  14. The Future of PSTC/PSTF • PSTC funds support WCS/others • Dormitory at BBSNP/Sumatra an example • Alumni/student management will continue • Student expeditions • Travel subject to political conditions • Endowment to assure continuance • Create the PSTF!
