After Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 his Vice President, Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) became President • LBJ had worked in Congress and the Senate since 1937, and was an expert at getting laws passed • In 1964, LBJ pushed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through • Prohibited discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, and sex • Pushed the Economic Opportunity Act, which spent $1 billion to combat poverty and unemployment • IN 1964, LBJ won reelection against Barry Goldwater • Goldwater was a conservative who wanted the government to stay out of the economy and was open to the use of nuclear weapons

Board of Education • Said that segregation in schools was unconstitutional • Banned state-sanctioned prayer in schools • Limited censorship and upheld freedom of speech • Forced states to reapportion election districts • Gave more rights to criminal defendants • Evidence gained illegally could not be used in court • People who could not afford a lawyer had to be given one for free • People have the right to a lawyer during questioning • Suspects must be told what there rights are before questioning
