How successful was Lenin in building Communism in Russia? “In six months we will build communism in Russia“ • By the end of 1920 peace had been made with Poland and foreign troops left Russia. • 1920-21 peasant uprisings over grain requisitioning and strikes in cities. • Government policy and drought in 1921 caused the worst famine in 30 years.

War Communism 1918-21 • The government took direct control of economic life • Nationalized industry – factories were to produce war goods • The Cheka were sent out to seize grain from the countryside to feed workers • Many peasants produced less grain as a result • Red Terror – Cheka became brutal

  5. Kronstadt Mutiny 1921 Naval base whose sailors helped in the Bolshevik seizure. Members of the base called for new elections for a Soviet Gov. Most at the base were peasants who knew what had happened in the fields. Trotsky sent the troops to recapture the island base. 10,000 Red Army troops were killed. Rebels were either executed or sent to the first Gulags 1921 – The Year of Crisis
