Showing Interest in Participants • Create a positive environment • Warm setting • Clients should feel welcome and respected • Interesting • Clients learn helpful facts to improve quality of life • Atmosphere provides opportunities for everyone to participate successfully • Effective • Clients engage in activities that move them closer to their goals (“Performing positive actions!) • Be Genuine! (“Mean what you say!”) • “How are you today?” • Read negative body language in your participants

Enthusiasm • Set the example yourself (Role model) • “BE POSITIVE!” • Utilize paralanguage • Voice quality • Tempo and pitch convey more than the words! • Everyone demonstrates! • Body language • Eye contact, posture, gestures • Be proud! Be concise! Believe in yourself! • Don’t be obnoxious! • Proxemics • Spatial relationships • Don’t invade personal space (Avoid intimidation!) • Research suggests 4 to 12 feet distance

Understanding Reasons forJoining Exercise Programs • Explain the positive benefits to personal health and fitness. • “Increased quality of life” • Exercise is a positive recreational activity! • Improve body image! Improve self-esteem! • Provide social reinforcement! • Involve family and friends! • Positive social environment!

  8. Reasons for Program Adherence • Address convenience to the participant • Be aware of scheduling! Make it feasible! • Set achievable goals! • If goals are unreachable, it’s disheartening! • Be realistic and have clients be realistic! • Support • Constant support and approval of their participation and effort! • Recognition • Express a genuine feeling of accomplishment! • Congrats! You’re doing great! Keep it up!

Reasons for Non-Compliance • Goals are unachievable! • Don’t encourage failure! • Injury (Excessive soreness & fatigue!) • Monitor activities, limit risky actions! • Boredom • Prevent staleness through creative programming and scheduling of activities! • Lack of attention • WAKE UP! Exercise leaders must be vibrant! • Fitness is a low priority! Explain benefits!

  10. Teaching Techniques • Direct or command style • Clients are told exactly what to do, when, and how! Little opportunity to make decisions regarding their behavior! • Very effective in large groups! • Indirect • Provides clients to explore and make decisions for themselves! • HFI role is to provide a range of experiences to choose from! • HFI does not just observe! • Good to use a flexible continuum!

  11. Personal Contact • Don’t invade personal space! • Be aware of other’s sense of space! • Keep distance about 4 to 12 feet! • Minimize physical touching unless part of instructional method! • Assisting in teaching technique, etc.

  12. Provide Motivation • Provide Creative Incentives! • T-shirts, parties, free prizes, etc. • Goal setting • Realistic and clearly explained! • Reinforce with incentives! • FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! FUN! • Games and friendly competitions! • Be careful! Watch for internal conflicts! • Basketball leagues, non-competitive activities!

  13. Important Considerations • Variety is the spice of life! • Cross-training, activity choices, etc. • Continual encouragement • Tough chore on bad days for you! • Gotta be up! Rarely let yourself be down! • Realistic yet challenging progression • Overload principle • Listening skills • Good sounding board! Don’t lecture or preach! • Class organization • Table 24.2
