  1. DO NOW You must be silent and working for credit Be on time Enter silently Grab papers Immediately start work No talking How many days left until we reach our big goal? How many protons, neutrons, and electrons does Chlorine (Cl) have? Find the number of neutrons in an atom of Boron (B) What equation are you using to find the number of neutrons? Why do you think that there are decimal points in the mass of elements?

  2. DO NOW REVIEW How many days left until we reach our big goal? How many protons, neutrons, and electrons does Chlorine (Cl) have? Find the number of neutrons in an atom of Boron (B) What equation are you using to find the number of neutrons? Why do you think that there are decimal points in the mass of elements?

  3. ISOTOPES! Notes expectations: We are silent We are writing what is in red We only ask questions about content No bathroom

  4. ISOTOPES Key Point #1: Two atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons are called isotopes. We can have more or less neutrons without changing what element we are talking about. Why?

  5. ISOTOPES Key Point #2: Having extra neutrons changes the mass of the element because MASS = #PROTONS + #NEUTRONS My # of protons never changes, but if my neutrons change, so will my mass!

  6. ISOTOPES Key Point #3: Isotope notation lets you know the mass of an element(in case it is different than usual). From there, we can figure out the # of neutrons for that isotope 16 7 OR Nitrogen - 16 Mass Element symbol N Mass Atomic number

  7. PRACTICE WITH HELP Question #1 Question #2 Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in the following isotopes: 23Al and Ar-42 An element has 19 protons, 23 neutrons, and 19 electrons. What element is this?

  8. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE • Work on your worksheet independently and quietly • If you have a question you should: • Look back to your notes • Quietly ask a neighbor • Raise your hand to ask Ms. Herrick for help POUR yourself into your work!

  9. EXIT TICKET Question #1 Question #2 Homework: Pick one of the first twenty elements on the periodic table. You are going to make a “facebook” profile for that element. Find out it’s name, atomic number, atomic mass, number of protons, neutrons and electrons, and if it has any common isotopes. You will have until Thursday to finish this project so that you can use my computers if need be. Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in the following isotopes: 20Ne and Ne-22 • Which element has an atomic mass of 15 and has 7 neutrons? • What if it had 8 neutrons and the same mass as above? What element is it now? • Hint: use your equation! Mass = # protons + # neutrons
