The Original Design Brief • Stained Glass Windows by Mary Hunter Ayer • 5thgrade students • Background: • Students have been studying the Middle Ages and the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in Medieval Times • Design Challenge: • Design and construct a model of a freestanding stained glass window that has elements of symmetry in it.

  3. Original Requirements • Your stained glass window must • be free standing • have 5 elements of symmetry • have at least 4 colors, not counting the black outline • be framed with black construction paper • have a peak or dome shape • have your name at the bottom right corner on the front

  4. Original Materials & Tools • Materials: • black construction paper • assorted colors of tissue paper • glue • Tools: • scissors • pencils • rulers

Georgia Performance Standards • GPS for 5th grade did not cover symmetry • GPS M5G1: • Students will understand congruence of geometric figures and the correspondence of their sides and angles. • Revised Overview: • Students will be introduced to the concept of congruency in basic geometric shapes (triangles). • They will be introduced to the three types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles, and scalene) and angles (right, acute, obtuse). • This will be useful for future mathematics courses and is foundational for higher-level concepts.

  7. Making The Stained Glass 1. Come up with a plan for your window 2. Cut out the shape that you want 3. Draw and cut out your triangles

  8. Making The Stained Glass 4. Cut out all of the triangles leaving a border around each The Final Product 5. Rip or cut different colors of tissue paper to fit your triangles and glue them to the back

  9. Overview of Activity • Good introductory assignment to congruency in geometric shapes • 5th grade level Geometry • May be difficult to do with scissors • Probably a messy activity for students • Fun opportunity for students to be creative
