    4. Herpes simplex defines as An acute viral infection that may produce a wide range of symptoms.

    5. Causes of herpes simplex By two strains of herpes virus: a- HVS-1. b-HSV-2.

    6. Epidemiology Oral herpes affects people of all ages ,races, and social groups. The incidence of initial infection occurs in children between six months and three years of age. By adolescence,62% of Americans have been infected with herpes simplex. Serum antibodies to HSV-1 can be fond in up to 90%of Americans.

    7. Once a patient has become infected by herpes virus, the infection remains for life. Immediately after a child has been infected with the oral herpes virus, the infection proceeds to three distinct stages: -Initial infection. -Latency. -Reactivation.

    8. TRANSMISSON OF ORAL HERPES VIRUS TO CHILDREN -Kissing. -Eating with contaminated utensils. -Mouthing or playing with contaminated toys. -Using contaminated tooth brushes.

    9. Description of oral herpes simplex Painful sores on the lips, tongue, roof of the mouth, and face. HVS-1 causes 80% of oral herpes. HSV-2 CAUSES THE REST. The first infection is termed primary herpetic gingivostomatitis. Between 20% to 40% of initial infections recur within one year. Recurrence are milder than the primary infection ,and are commonly known as fever blisters. Fever blisters on the lips and face is called herpes simplex labialis. This condition last about 7-10 days in healthy children. Oral herpes infections should not confused with aphthous ulcer.

    10. Sign and symptoms A-Primary herpetic gingivostomatitis: -Painful blisters on the tongue and palate. -Fiery red gingiva. -Dehydrated and weak. -Fever. -Malaise. -Loss of appetite. -Increased salivation and foul breath.

    11. B-Recurrent herpes labialis -Tingling or itching. -Blister (vesicles) erupt (14 days)

    12. OUT BREAK TRIGGERS Stress. Illness. Poor nutrition. Menstruation. Sunlight. Local physical injury. Suppression of immune system.

    13. Diagnosis of oral herpes Clinical finding. Laboratory test.

    14. PREVENTING RECUURENT ORAL HERPES INFECTION By avoiding certain triggers. Using sunscreens. Individuals with 6 or more recurrences of Herpes per year, require antiviral drugs to suppress the herpes virus.

    15. TREATMENT FOR ORAL HERPES SIMPLEX No drug can actually cure or eliminate the herpes simplex virus. Penciclovir 1% cream (Denavir) every 2 hours for 4 days. It reduces the duration of pain. Oral Acyclovir (Zovirax) 20 mg/kg per day for children.

    16. DENTAL TREATMENT AND ORAL HERPES INFECTION All stages of a herpes infection can be contagious. Dental treatment can cause reactivation of oral herpes within 3 days of major dental treatment (Root canal, dental surgery).

    17. TIPS FOR PARENTS For primary oral herpes infection in an infant or a toddler, use a mouth rinse (Benadryl and Kaopectate) mixture. For recurrent herpes infection, using (Abreva) cream decreases pain and healing time. Wash your child’s hand to prevent infecting the eye.

    18. Do not let an infected child kiss siblings or other loved-ones. Blisters and cold sores should be kept dry, using tissue or apply some cornstarch. Eating utensils should be thoroughly washed. Provide plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
