Basic Issues ID & Autism • Significant health inequalities compared to the general population (e.g. Cooper, Melville & Morrison, 2004) • Higher levels of health needs than the general population (e.g. Wilson & Hair, 1990; Kapell et al, 1998) and these often go unrecognized and unmet (e.g. Lennox & Kerr, 1997) • Tele-healthcare technology has been seen to reduce hospital admission over standard care alone (e.g. Cooper & O’Hara, 2010) - Now going mobile! • Tech interventions - Expensive in the short term, if successful at keeping individuals out of hospital can prove cheaper in the long term, saving respective health systems money (McLean et al, 2011).

Ireland: IDS – TILDA • 753 people > age of 40 with an ID - recruited from the National Intellectual Disability Database (NIDD) – Prof. McCarron (PI) Report 2011Example Health Issues: • 61% - Overweight or obese. • 56.5% - Not received easy to read information on keeping healthy • 69.1% - Never received easy to read information on healthcare services • 1 out of 5 of carers felt that their health had suffered www.idstilda.tcd.ie

Conclusions • BH/Self Management/Health informatics model - Increase patient confidence in understanding and managing their condition & using technology. • Home based education and rehabilitation will be of increasing importance to enhance patient outcomes. • Research Area 1: Improving knowledge alone is not enough – need to confirm structure and content to self-management, educational and behavioural change programmes as well asthe technology used with ID & Autism. • Research Area 2: Needto refine the best practice models for implementation (Health Informatics to aid Service Re-design).
