  2. Celtic was founded in 1888 as a charitable foundation to help the Catholic Irish in Glasgow. • By 1893 Celtic had won all the major trophies, the Scottish cup, the Glasgow cup, the Scottish League Championship and the Charity cup. • It had the largest stadium in Britain holding 70,000.

  3. Rangers did not start off as a Protestant club. • It was founded in 1872. • By 1890s it became the focus for a strong working class protestant identity which was anti Catholic and anti Irish. • It was seen as the only team which could halt the “Irishmen” Celtic’s success.

  4. The Old Firm Rivalry • Scottish football crowds were very badly behaved. • In the 1909 Cup final between Rangers and Celtic spectators invaded the pitch. • During the violence 130 people were injured.
