  1. Teaching the Novel:PLanNING

  2. Selecting the Novels • Geographical range (at least Britain and the US) • Time range (19th and 20th/21st centuries) • Accessibility (a variety of difficulty) • Your students (gender, culture…)

  3. Scheduling the Reading • Make the students aware of ‘the parts’ (these may or may not be chapters) • Work to avoid ‘dragging it out’ (three-week maximum, except….) • Consider the students’ calendar (school and outside influences) • Leave reasonable ‘elbow room’ (try to avoid sudden assignments)

  4. Set a Focus • You can’t do it all. (We want to. We can’t.) • Begin with what you love about it (setting, history, a set of characters…) • If the novel was ‘recommended’… (ask the ‘recommending’ parties) • After the first time… (find what was engaging)

  5. Find Your Resources • Try The Center for Learning (www.centerforlearning.org) • Scan the professional organizations (NCTE: www.ncte.org) / (IRA: www.reading.org) • Use the AP EDG (http://apcentral.collegeboard.com) • Explore the internet (places like www.teachit.co.uk)

  6. Plan to Enjoy It(not optional)
