Key Theme throughout E.B and other National Policies, Reports and Drivers • “ All professionals with an interest in older people should be sharing expertise and listening to local people on service priorities. This should be done through consultation and by day to day listening to older people” (Excluded Older People, Social Exclusion Unit Interim Report, Office of Deputy Prime Minister, 2005)

Commissioning a Patient Led NHS, Department of Health 2005 • Local Trusts are required to submit their plans for development with “ Evidence of the views and contributions of all the relevant parties they have consulted” • Trusts should be “ Engaging with local people and other local service providers to ensure patients views are properly heard”

Standards for Better Health: National Standards, Local ActionDepartment of Health, 2005 • “ The views of patients, their carers and others are sought and taken into account in designing, planning, delivering and improving health care services” • “Reflects the needs of the population we serve and which is based on nationally agreed evidence or best practice”

Examples of PPI across the 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust • Supporting local initiatives – A voluntary organisationhas an office in Hollins Park House. • Actingtogether - Mental Health Service Users delivering training to ward staff. • Deciding together – PPI Forum fully involved in drawing National Patient Survey Action Plan. • Consultation– Voluntary organisation regularly audit mental health service users in Wigan using a questionnaire they designed themselves. • Information - Learning Disability service users designed easy read PALS leaflet.

Good Practice Examples Locally- • Service User/ Carers being employed and trained as Volunteers to complete Serious Untoward Incident Investigations • Funding being agreed for volunteers/ service users and carers through FINCH (Friends in Community Health) to “meet and greet” and signpost visitors to the acute wards • Patient and Carer Liaison Officer- Organic Services • Disability Partnership- Self Help/ Support stall on Warrington Market 6 days per week

Change for the Better- Access and Equality for Older People, Driven by Local Delivery Teams, full and equal membership from all stakeholders • Recovery Approach- fully inclusive of Voluntary Sector • Service Improvement Project- Process Mapping joint training for service users/ carers and staff- Quick Wins, Formidable tasks etc • Leadership and Empowerment Course for Service Users-John Moore’s University

  10. 10 Steps to PPI • Vulnerable Adults’ Task Force for Older People, Halton- General Hospital Liaison Service • 5 Borough Wide Trust PPI Advisory Group- Assistant Director of Inclusion and Partnerships • Joint memory clinics with Alzheimer's Society, staff, service users and carers- Signposting, support, information- Dementia Information afternoons, benefits agency, OT, Speech and Language therapy, Social Services referrals etc

Sharing good practice examples across the Managed Learning Network • 5 Standards for Consultation and Engagement: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear • Representation from top down through the Directorate Group and bottom up from the local, very active user/ carer forum- Country wide Hosted Chat- Team leaders from Memory Clinic, CMHT, Young Onset etc- Doncaster and South Humber Trust • PROP Group (People Relying on People)-carer and service user led support group for young people with dementia- Doncaster and South Humber Trust

LOTUS Group Project- Listening Openly to Users of Service- Advertising campaign for volunteers, Project Manager, Facilitator, Active and Passive members, Induction Day attendance, involvement in interviews- North East Wales NHS Trust • Mental Health subgroup- Currently focusing on Everybody’s Business- Redcar and Cleveland • Joint Vision for growing old in Salford- full involvement is vital element- Salford PCT

  13. Involvement in Service Redesign- In Patient and Resource Center Development, Interview Panels, Reach Beyond Project- Salford PCT • User Champions/ Carer Champions- Three Locality Hubs will form membership of city wide group- Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust
