  3. pH • The pH of a solution indicates its concentration of hydronium (H3O+) ions • The pH of a solution is often critical • Also indicates hydroxide (OH-) ion concentration

  4. pH Value • Tells if a solution is neutral, acidic, or basic • Range from: 0 to 14 • Neutral: 7. • Means concentration of H3O+ = concentration of OH- • Acidic: Less than 7 • concentration of H3O+ is greater than concentration of OH- • Basic: More than 7 • concentration of OH- is greater than concentration of H3O+

  5. pH • Small differences in pH mean larger differences in acidity • Apple juice is 100 times more acidic than coffee
