Prescription Drug Abuse • On April 19, 2011, the Administration released a comprehensive action plan to address the Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis • Expands upon the Administration’s National Drug Control Strategy • 4 major action areas: • Education • Monitoring • Proper medication disposal • Enforcement

Illustrations of the Problem • Drug-induced deaths now outnumber gunshot deaths in America • In 17 states and DC, drug-induced deaths outnumber motor vehicle crashes as leading cause of death • FL practitioners purchased over 40M oxycodone tablets as compared to a total of 4.5M in the rest of the US • Highest abuse: taken from, given to or sold to by friends and relatives

HHS Rx Drug Abuse & HIT Work Group Goal: Reduce opioid-related drug deaths by increasing timely access to Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), including exploring HIT and State HIEs Co-Chairs: • Westley Clark, SAMHSA • Farzad Mostashari, ONC Membership: Federal representation from health and law enforcement agencies

  19. Rx Drug Abuse & HIT Work Group • Improve the effectiveness of PDMPs though HIT • No new data sources or systems • Leverage existing technology • Expand upon DOJ’s pilot efforts to build PDMP’s interoperability and data sharing across state lines, including leveraging State HIEs
