  2. Preparing the Patient • Usual work-up, esp., GOALS • Assess prior experience & expectations • Dispel Myths & Misconceptions • Self-control ? • ( NB: total contol---POW, cults, hostage situations, etc.) • Awareness & amnesia ? • Truth-serum ? • Memory as a recording ?

Preparing the Patient II • Defining Hypnosis for the Patient: • “ a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention” • changing the field of attention • broad  narrow • flashlight  laser ( NB: bare bulb in meditation) • like using a telescope or microscope– doesn’t change reality, but rather what you see and what it means

  4. Preparing the Patient III • How hypnosis works: 1. Greater use of imagination 2. Suggestion of useful sensations, feelings, ideas, images, etc. 3. Exploration of inner life

Preparing the Patient IV • Hypnosis is an individualized experience • Differing degrees of aptitude in different areas • Different responses in different contexts: i.e., relationship, problematic situation, expectation set • Possible frameworks: • Conscious vs. Unconscious activation • All hypnosis is based on your own inner abilities
