  3. The most popular music genre in the 1930s was Jazz. People would call it “swing” The music industry could no longer ignore the importance of jazz, because it was so popular mainly with young people. Became mainstream, Jazz played everywhere and anytime. The 1930s Music

  4. Major Events in the 1930s Even though the Great Depression happened at this time, music had a big effect on it. However, jazz music was flexible. While businesses, including the record industry, were failing, dance halls were packed with people dancing the jitterbug to the music of big bands, which would come to be called swing music. It attracted people all over the world.

  5. Louis was born August 4, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Came to prominence in the 1920s influencing countless musicians with both his daring trumpet style and unique vocals. He was known for the song “Star Dust” Armstrong died in New York July 6, 1971. He made a record deal with Okeh records to make his own band under his name “Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five” and made more than 60 records. Louis Armstrong

  6. Jazz vocalist born April 7, 1915 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They called her “Lady Day”. Was discovered by a producer John Hammond. In 1935, she made singles like “what a Little Moonlight Can Do” and “Miss Brown To You”. In 1947, she was arrested and convicted for narcotics possession. Sentenced to one year and a day of jail. And then wasn’t able to perform in certain places. She died on July 17, 1959 of a heart and liver problems from doing Heroin. Billie Holiday

  7. Actress and singer Judy Garland born June 10, 1922 In Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She starred in the famous movie “The Wizard of Oz” which made hits. Although she loved acting she became more of a singer. Her first feature film was “Pigskin Palace” was featured in 1936. She then got married twice, but divorced eventually in 1952. In 1951, she got her career going again and starred in her own Broadway show at the Palace Theater. She had 2 daughters eventually, but once she died she left history and people still celebrate her at her birthplace where they hold an annual festival. Judy Garland
