  1. EMnet Features: Tracking Recent System Activity

  2. System Activity To track recent activity on your EMnet system, right-click on the satellite icon and select System Activity.

  3. System Activity This will open the System Activity dialog.System Activity shows a record of recent system activity. It can be useful for troubleshooting, or for pinpointing time for recent events.

  4. System Activity System Activity shows the most recent events from the Event Log.The System Activity log will begin from the last startup of EMnet. • The Event Log is a text document that tracks the date and time for the following events: • Messages sent or received • Startup and shutdown events • Transmission of receipts and acknowledgements • System error messages • Reconnection events The Event Log is limited in size, so as new records are added to the log, the oldest records are deleted.

  5. Viewing the Event Log To view the entire Event Log, click Log File. This will open the eventlog.txt file, using the program your computer uses as the default program to open plain text files (usually Notepad or Wordpad).

  6. Viewing the Event Log NOTE: The event log is a static record. The text file shows all events that occurred up to the time you opened the log, but will not automatically add new events as they occur. To see events happening in real time, remain in the System Activity window.

  7. System Activity The System Activity window is dynamically updated; as new events are added to the event log, they will automatically appear here. This way, you can watch system activity as it happens.

  8. System Activity These checkboxes determine whether additional events are being tracked by the event log. If you temporarily check various events, you will be able to observe the System Activity dialog to see these routine events as they occur.

  9. System Activity Checking Messages will give you additional information about incoming EMnet and EAS messages.

  10. System Activity Checking Heartbeats will track heartbeats coming from the server (one satellite heartbeat sent every two minutes).

  11. System Activity Checking Packets will track when packets of data come over the satellite.

  12. System Activity Checking Weather will monitor the continuous weather feed information coming from the satellite for the Real EMWINN program

  13. System Activity Checking Automatic Updates will track information related to EMnet software updates.

  14. System Activity Because the event log is limited in size, the event log does not normally track every heartbeat received from the satellite, every packet received through the system, or every time weather information is transmitted from the satellite. These routine events would fill up the event log too quickly.

  15. System Activity With no verbosity checked, a log may contain events over the past several months; with all verbosity checked, a log may not extend back more than a single day.

  16. System Activity Unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem, remember to uncheck these events before you leave the dialog, to prevent the event log from filling up too quickly.

  17. Agent Icons Checking Show Agent Icons will allow you to view additional logs, and more closely monitor EMnet connectivity.

  18. Agent Icons When you check Show Agent Icons, several new icons will appear in the system tray next to the EMnet icon. • EMnet uses three agents to communicate with the EMnet servers: • The POP3 Receive Agent • The SMTP Send Agent • The Notification Send Agent The dark-colored “R” icon is the Receive Agent.

  19. Agent Icons When you check Show Agent Icons, several new icons will appear in the system tray next to the EMnet icon. • EMnet uses three agents to communicate with the EMnet servers: • The POP3 Receive Agent • The SMTP Send Agent • The Notification Send Agent The dark-colored “S” icon is the Send Agent.

  20. Agent Icons When you check Show Agent Icons, several new icons will appear in the system tray next to the EMnet icon. • EMnet uses three agents to communicate with the EMnet servers: • The POP3 Receive Agent • The SMTP Send Agent • The Notification Send Agent The light-colored “S” icon is the Notification Agent.

  21. Agent Icons To view the logs for any of these agents, right-click on the icon and select System Activity

  22. Agent Logs These checkboxes determine whether additional events are being tracked by the agent log. This example shows the log for the POP3 Receive Agent

  23. Agent Logs Checking Email Details will give you additional information about incoming EMnet and EAS messages. This example shows the log for the POP3 Receive Agent

  24. Agent Logs Checking Session Progress will log information each time the agent communicates with the EMnet servers. This example shows the log for the POP3 Receive Agent

  25. Agent Logs Checking Debug gives very specific, in-depth information about your station’s connection to the EMnet servers. This example shows the log for the POP3 Receive Agent

  26. Agent Logs As with the EMnet System Activity log - unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem, you probably do not want to leave the debug verbosity checked, or the event log may fill up too quickly.
