History • Jazz and “Blues” has its roots in the cotton fields of the “Old South” • The freestyle singing and the altering of the duration of the notes became the roots of what we now know as jazz. • Jazz as we know it today developed in new Orleans at around the turn of the 20th century. • Some jazz greats include Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman.
Jazz Today • From “classical” to popular music, some jazz elements are incorporated into many music styles. • For example George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” is a symphonic jazz composition. • Also, many of today’s popular song artists use the free style singing of the old plantation workers of the “old South” in many of their songs.
