Lesson 1: Caring for Your Teeth, Skin, Hair, and Nails

Your Teeth

  • Must have to chew and speak clearly

  • Give shape and structure to your mouth

  • Gums are just as important as teeth

  • Brush and floss daily

  • Toothpaste should have flouride

  • Page 121

Tooth Decay

  • Bacteria and saliva build plaque

  • Cavity – acid eats away at tooth

  • Toothaches happen when the cavity is spread to the root

  • Tartar – hardened plaque that threatens gum health

  • Important to get your teeth cleaned every year!


Your skin

Your Skin

  • Skin is the body’s largest organ

  • 3 layers:

    • Epidermis, dermis, fat cells

  • Functions:

    • Waterproofing

    • Provide color

    • Vitamin D formation

    • Protection

    • Temperature control

    • Sensation

  • Skin condition

  • Oil clogged hair follicles

  • Affected by hormones

  • Usually located on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders

  • Gently wash area at least twice a day with mild soap and water

  • Avoid touching affected area

  • Avoid heavy makeup, creams, and lotions

  • Keep clean!

  • Eat properly and stay physically active.

  • Protect yourself from the sun.

  • Wear sunscreen, reapply every hour.

  • Avoid body decorations

  • Daily brushing is important

  • Wash regularly using a gentle shampoo

  • Always rinse well

  • Be mindful of heat and chemicals (pg 125)

  • Dandruff – flacking of the outer layer of dead skin cells on the scalp

  • Head lice – parasitic insect that lives on the hair shaft

Nails

  • Protect the sensitive tips of your fingers and toes

  • Clean and soften with warm water (push cuticles)

  • Trim nails NOT CHEW!

  • Smooth rough edges with a nail file

  • Make sure you have enough light

  • Avoid light that is too bright

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes

  • Protect eyes from injury

  • Optometrist – examine eyes for vision problems, prescribe corrective lenses

  • Ophthalmologist – specializes in the structure, functions, and disease of the eye

  • Be checked at least once a year

    • Nearsightedness – can only see close up

    • Farsightedness – can only see distant

    • Astigmatism – images are distorted

Ears

  • Ears allow for hearing, listening, learning and BALANCE

  • Avoid loud sounds (decibels)

  • 60 is normal, 125 can be painful

  • 80-90 for a long period of time can cause permanent damage

  • Tinnitus – constant ringing of the ears

  • Keep the volumes fairly low

  • Wear earplugs

  • Clean the outside of your ears, but don’t put anything into the ear canal

  • Wear a cover on your ears in the winter

  • See a doctor right away if you have sore ears
