  2. Quick Write You have been wrongly convicted of murder and sent to a prison far away from your home. Years later, you discover the identity of the actual murderer. Make a few notes on how you think you would react.

Vocabulary: • troika- a Russian wagon pulled by three horses. p.2 • czar- an emperor or king p.2 • flog(ged)- to beat with a whip or stick p. 2 • knout- a whip used to beat criminals p. 2 • samovar-a metal pot used for heating water for tea. p.1 • Siberia- region in Russian known for cold temperatures and isolation. p.2 • mirth- amusement/ laughter p.2 • fortnight- 14 days and nights (2 weeks) p.4

  4. More notes on Tolstoy: • The original title is “God Sees the Truth, But Bides His Time.” • His father was a count and his mother a princess. But when he was old, he led a poor, quiet life. • In 1852, he was in the Russian army.

  5. Theme • A central insight about life in a work of literature. • Themes are complete as a phrase. Words like revenge, religion, ambition and regret are just topics/subjects in a piece. • A theme on revenge would be: “Seeking revenge only further harms the person who has been wronged.”

  6. Checking Your Reading • We will now read the first few paragraphs as a class. Using the white board, we will illustrate the setting and mood created by the writing.
