  1. Magnum Shear™ Testing Apparatus and Redesign Problem Team Clean Cut Testing Apparatus The  Magnum Shear™, produced by Bullet Tools, is used to cut flooring and siding materials by forcing a chisel shaped blade through the product in a 'crush cut’.  When cutting composite decking materials, the Magnum Shear™ causes ‘blowout’ in the lower portion of the cut. The blowout is characterized by crumbling of the material and a cut that is not clean or straight. The sensor package consists of a full Wheatstone bridge and linear potentiometer powered by a 5V source. The Wheatstone bridge, placed to capture the maximum moment seen by the upper I-beam, acts as a load cell. The combination of these to sensors allows for collection of position versus load data. 2012 Brian Norman | Craig Daniels | Vince Mayer | Ted Florence | Wes Anderson Double Blade Redesign Blowout on a piece of Composite Decking Grommets allow the front blade to move throughout the cut Stock blade for finishing cut Project Goals 1) Develop a testing apparatus to determine the force acting on the blade as a function of position throughout the cut. 2) Reduce the blowout of composite decking by at least 50% through redesign of the Magnum Shear™. Circuit diagram of the sensor Package Solution Angled spacer to properly align front blade Longer blade for initial cut Project Learning During initial testing it was noted that on thin slices cracks would propagate on the discard side. The double blade design, fitted on the original Magnum Shear™, controls crack propagation to produce a clean cut. This is done by having the lead blade cut slightly ahead of the trailing blade, which creates a thin layer of material that the crack propagates through. Double Blade Cut Result of a double blade cut Testing an angled feed with the blade flipped Sponsored By: The Satec was used to find initial force data and better understand the cause of blowout. Later the sensor package was calibrated with the Satec. Special thanks to: Nathan Brand, Dr. Jay McCormack, Dr. Edwin Odom, Dr. Eric Wolbercht, Russ Porter, Curtis Bower, and Tyler Flowers
