  1. Algae Lab – Biology Tony Keasha Sarah

  2. The initial reason for this lab will be to allow you to practice measuring with precision and accuracy (and use a guesstimate in your measurements), and use scientific notation and significant digits in your measurements. After the petri dishes are allowed to grow for several weeks, we will be able to use the microorganisms in them for other labs.

  3. Start with a plastic petri dish and a graduated cylinder. Be sure to record the size of the petri dish. Blue- Petri Dish- 12.1 grams Red- Petri Dish- 12.1 grams Clear- Petri Dish- 12.1 grams Yellow- Petri Dish- 12.1 grams

  4. Measure out about 10 mL of distilled water. Record the exact amount. Blue- Distilled Water in Graduated Cylinder- 11.02 mL in a 100 mL cylinder Red- Distilled water in Graduated Cylinder- 12mL in a 100 mL cylinder Clear- Distilled water in Graduated Cylinder- 9 mL in a 100 mL cylinder Yellow- Distilled water in Graduated Cylinder- 10.1 mL in a 100 mL

  5. Pour the water into the Petri dish.

  6. Measure out about 5 to 10 mL of the pink fertilizer mix provided by the teacher. Record the exact amount. Blue- Pink Fertilizer mix- 10 mL Red- Pink Fertilizer mix- 7 mL Clear- Pink Fertilizer- 11 mL Yellow- Pink Fertilizer- 10 mL

  7. Measure out 10 mL of water and a small amount of soil, and debris from the aquarium bottles. Record the exact amount both quantitatively and qualitatively. Blue- 11 mL of distilled water 2 mL of debris from the aquarium bottles Red- 10.5 mL of distilled water 5 mL of debris from the aquarium bottles Clear- 10.7 mL of distilled water 7 mL of debris from the aquarium bottles Yellow- 9.4 mL of distilled water 6 mL of debris from the aquarium bottles OR

  8. Replace the lid on the petri dish. Cut out a circle of transparent cellophane slightly larger than the top of the petri dish and carefully tape it to the petri dish top. Record the this both quantitatively and qualitatively.

  9. Repeat these steps but use blue cellophane, yellow cellophane, and clear cellophane. You should have four petri dishes, each with a different colored top on it. These should then be placed under fluorescent lights provided by the teacher.

  10. Hopefully, microorganisms will grow in the petri dishes over the next few weeks.

  11. For this lab report, you should include on the following pages of this PowerPoint: • A Materials section – List all the items that you needed to do this lab. • A Methods section – List how you used the above items and include all measurements that were taken. • All measurements should be • in metric form- in scientific notation form- with the uncertainty (the guesstimate) to the proper decimal position • Make sure you include both the quantitative observations AND the qualitative observations
