Natural Selection – Day 2 • Essential Question: How does genetic diversity allow or prevent a species ability to adapt to its environment? • Learning Target: Students will be able to identify and describe the four components of Natural Selection. • Learning Task: I can identify the four components of Natural Selection. I can create flashcards and Frayer Models to demonstrate my understanding of Evolution Vocabulary.

  2. Welcome! Warm Up Monday 4/21/13Week of 4/21 – 4/25 • What does it mean that “organisms over-produce”? • Give an example of organisms over-producing. • What was the best part of your spring break? • Record your answers on a separate sheet of paper to turn in at the end of class!

  4. More Evolution Vocab – 12 • New Evolution Vocab: Adaptation, Biological Evolution, Extinction, Species • Record these words & definitions in notebook, then create Frayer for the new 4 words (you should have 7 total on the page)

Evolution Vocab 12 Darwin: a naturalist who proposed and provided scientific evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors Natural Selection: survival of the fittest organisms that are the best adapted to their environment and will live long enough to reproduce and pass on those adaptations Theory: a explanation that ties together many hypothesis and observations Adaptation: a trait that increases the chances that an organism will survive and reproduce Biological evolution: the change over time of living organisms Extinction: The evolutionary termination of a species caused by the failure to reproduce and the death of all remaining members of the species Species: the most specific classification of living things

What is multi-drug resistant tuberculosis? Sicknesses in humans caused by microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi) Tuberculosis (TB), caused by bacteria TB that does not respond to regular medication

  14. Segment 6:Why Does Evolution Matter Now? 4. What happens if a patient does not take all of their medication? 5. Why is a tuberculosis epidemic in Russia dangerous to us (why should we care)? Not all of the bacteria are killed, some are resistant and pass this trait on to their offspring In our global community, microbes travel easily from place to place
