  2. What is Multiplication? Respond in writing… What is multiplication? • Record your thinking in your notebook. • Check with a neighbor to see how your thinking is similar.

  3. How Many do you see? How many paper clips do you see? How do you see them? • Keep Track of the number of paper clips. • Write down how you keep track of your thinking. • Be specific

  4. Big Idea That Surfaces Thinking in Groups • 7 groups of 3 • 4 groups of 5 +1 Unitizing • 1 group containing 2 objects • 1 group containing 10 objects Moving beyond counting by 1’s

  5. Thinking In Groups • Place a Large amount of counters in the middle of the table. • On the word “go” grab as many sets of two that you can before we say stop. • Don’t count the total number of sets, just concentrate on making groups of two.

  6. Making groups: What did you notice? • What kind of Thinking were you doing as you were making groups? • What would this activity tell you about student’s thinking?

Homework • Dot Images - Try the activity "Dot Images" numerous times.  Make sure to select images that are challenging and yet appropriate for your students.  Write up a brief description of the images you selected, why you selected them and what insights you gained about how your students ability to visualize multiplicatively. • Splitting Arrays - Complete the practice sheets "Splitting Arrays".  You will be using the practice sheets to split several arrays into helping facts and notate the equations that match each array. You will be asked to use the same arrays and find two different helping facts for each one.  In order to complete this homework, you will receive two copies of the practice sheet.  Follow the directions at the top as well as at the bottom of the sheet.
