The Marketing Environment Key terms • baby boomerA person born in the postwar years (generally considered in the USA and other Allied countries as between 1945 and the early 1960s), when there was an increase in the birth rate following the return of servicemen at the end of World War II. • business capabilitya collection or container of people, process and technology that is addressable for a specific purpose. • business cycleA long-term fluctuation in economic activity between growth and recession • competencywhile organizations have capabilities, individuals have competencies. • competitive analysisAn assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This analysis provides both an offensive and defensive strategic context to identify opportunities and threats. • competitive intelligenceThe action of defining, gathering, analyzing, and distributing intelligence about products, customers, and competitors to support executives and managers. • consumer confidenceAn economic indicator measuring the degree of optimism that consumers feel about the overall state of the economy and their personal financial situation. • consumer price indexA statistical estimate of the level of prices of goods and services bought for consumption purposes by households. • cultureThe beliefs, values, behavior and material objects that constitute a people's way of life; the sum of learned beliefs, values, and customs that regulate the behavior of members of a particular society. • customer relationship managementA widely implemented model for managing a company's interactions with customers, clients, and sales prospects. Some analysts added legal and rearranged the mnemonic to SLEPT; inserting environmental factors expanded it to PESTEL or PESTLE, which is popular in the United Kingdom. • processin reference to capabilities, a process is how the capability is executed. • product liabilitythe idea that manufacturers of products are responsible for the safety of that product, which may be compromised due to defect or every day use. • purchasing powerThe amount of goods and services that can be bought with a unit of currency or by consumers. • social mediaInteractive forms of media that allow users to interact with and publish to each other, generally by means of the Internet. • subcultureA group of people who share a set of secondary values, such as hipsters. • target segmentsStrategic groupings in a market that a firm considers likely to convert to customers. • tariffA system of government-imposed duties levied on imported or exported goods; a list of such duties, or the duties themselves.
