  2. Natural Resources

  3. Natural Resources • Natural resources • Any natural material that is used by humans • Example: • Water • Petroleum • Minerals • Forests • Animals

  4. Natural Resources • Nonrenewable resource • A resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is consumed • Example: • Oil • Coal • Nuclear energy • Minerals • Natural gas • Wood • Animals

  5. Natural Resources • Renewable resources • Natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed • Examples: • Wind • Solar • Water • Geothermal

  6. Natural Resources • Conserving natural resources • Use resources only when necessary • Take care of resources…even when not using them • Energy conservation • Reduce, reuse, recycle

  7. Natural Resources • Energy conservation • Natural resources used for energy: • Heat homes • Drive cars • Run computers • Conserve energy! • Turn off lights • Use full washing machine • Bike, walk, mass transit

  8. Natural Resources • Recycle • Process of recovering valuable or useful materials from waste or scrap • Process of reusing some items

  9. Natural Resources • Summary: • What are natural resources? • What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources? • What are some ways to conserve natural resources?
