  1. 3 E’s How to use them in your essays.

  2. What are the 3 E’s • Example (thesis/ answer to the question or prompt) • Evidence (Quote or paraphrase) • Explanation (Analysis)

  3. How to use it • Essay topic- Shrek’s characteristics • Example- In the movie, Shrek is shown to be “strong”, but he is actually quite sensitive. • Evidence- Shrek compares himself to an onion while speaking with Donkey. • Explanation- By using the analogy about the onion, he is proving that he has many layers of traits, one being sensitivity. On the outer layer he may seem strong, but inside he struggles with his emotions. He acknowledges this to Donkey.

  4. How to use it • Question- Are Kino and Juana happy at the very beginning of the book? • Example- Kino and Juana are happy at the beginning of the book. • Evidence- “Song of Family,” “It was a morning like other mornings and yet perfect among mornings (p. 3)” • Explanation- You can tell that they like their lives, because one uses the word ‘perfect’ to describe something good. Another reason is the song of the family which represents safety, warmth and whole. All of these are positive, happy descriptions.

  6. How to use it • Question- Because of the books he read, how was Tom different from those around him? • Example- Due to the fact that Tom read and learned from his readings, he had a desire to hold himself to a higher standard than those around him. • Evidence- “He grew to lament his shabby clothing and his dirt and to wish to be clean.” “…but instead of splashing around in the Thames for the fun of it, he began to find an added value because of the washings & cleansings it afforded.” (p17) • Explanation- This shows that Tom, through his readings, developed a greater sense of self and now knew better. He wanted to be better dressed and to be clean which were things that his peers did not care, or know to care, about at all.
