  2. Objectives and HW • Model problems using algebraic equations • Be able to solve problems with interest (I = Prt) • Be able to solve problems about areas and length • Vocabulary: interest (I); principal (P); interest rate (r); similar triangles HW: Lesson 3

Terms/key words that indicate operations: Addition: more than; greater than; sum; exceed; together; total; increased  Subtraction: less than; difference; smaller than; fewer; reduced; decreased Multiplication: product; x times more; double the size, triple the amount; “of”  Division: quotient; split into x groups

General Steps in solving Word Problems Read- Read the problem X = answer- Set the variable equal to what you’re trying to solve for Read; key words- Read the problem again and look for key words that indicate operations Translate- using only the one variable that is set equal to what you’re trying to solve for, read the problem again and translate phrases and sentences using that variable Draw- Draw a diagram or chart if applicable

  5. Interest Problems Ex. I = Prt- # 21 on p. 82 X = amount @ 4% 12000 – X = amount @ 4 ½ % .04X + .045(12000 – X) = 525 .04X + 540 - .045X = 525 -.005X = -15 X = 3000
