10.1 & 10.3 (part 1): America Adds Territory

Alaska and hawaii

Alaska and Hawaii

  • Alaska bought from Russians in 1867, considered fool at the time but has been very valuable

  • Sugar companies owned by Am. citizens convinced the U.S. to annex (add) Hawaii in 1898

  • U.S. added Hawaii and other Pacific islands because they were strategically useful for refueling & resupplying U.S. ships

Puerto rico

Puerto Rico

  • Gained from Spain in Span.-Am. War, we first ruled it by military force

  • Foraker Act set up a civilian (non-military) govt.

  • Puerto Rican are U.S. citizens but P.R. is only a U.S. territory

    • They have not voted to become a state yet…

Cuba

  • After Span. Am. War, we left troops there (though we technically didn’t take it over)

  • Troops did helped the Cubans,

    • but their main purpose was to protect U.S. sugar and tobacco companies

  • The Platt Amendment basically gave us special rights in Cuba, while keeping out other countries
