  2. Where are we now ?? • The field of Human Resources is truly at a crossroads. • More and more of what was “traditionally” taken care of by HR is being outsourced. • Companies are not maintaining an HR staff ratio comparable to total staff. • The trend of people leaving HR is growing !!

  3. What are the causes ?? • It’s time for us to be open that dealing with “Humans” is truly a challenge !! • HR people are reaching their wits end because they look for outlets within their organization and can’t find support or relief. • HR people remain isolated outside of their profession when they could be (and should be) connected !!

  4. “Support” function Implementer Wanting to be “at the table” Integrated through the organization Initiator Daily Strategic Where Are YOU now ??

  5. How can we move forward ?? • C _______________ • R _______________ • E _______________ • A _______________ • M _______________

  6. How can we move forward ?? • C ulture of Creativity !! • R adically Rational !! • E nthusiastically Engaged !! • A stounding Attitude !! • M agnificently Moving !!

  7. Culture of Creativity !! • The number one reason employees stay or leave a company is it’s CULTURE. • HR needs to take the lead in defining the company culture. This is NOT the CEO’s job !! • Be creative !! (No . . . I REALLY MEAN IT !!)

  8. Culture of Creativity !! • Areas for HR to define the culture: • Work Environment – whether office or warehouse • Training Programs – Long-term vs. next trend !! • Empowerment vs. Compliance – Teach vs. Police

  9. Radically Rational !! • We need to present business solutions to situations throughout the Company. • It’s time for us to be “Businesspeople” who practice HR and not “HR professionals” who may understand their business . . . or may not !! • This is an area where we can truly excel and utilize the problem solving skills that are essential to effective HR !!

  10. Radically Rational !! • This is a skill set that will allow us to keep the “human factor” in business decisions. • “Radically Rational” means that we bring the ability to address issues in a timely and CONSISTENT manner. • HR people who take the emotion out of situations can remain a vital resource for companies because they can rationally approach issues.

  11. Enthusiastically Engaged !! • Employee Engagement is THE issue that will maintain retention in our current Labor Climate. • If HR is NOT engaged, how can we expect staff to be engaged ?? • HR MUST be the model for the organization when it comes to Engagement.

  12. Enthusiastically Engaged !! • Engagement How To’s: • Walk the Talk – Don’t tell Upper Management about Engagement if you are not engaged yourself. • Develop a Mentoring Program – Your organization can use this to have your leaders be real champions because they are molding your future !!

  13. Enthusiastically Engaged !! • Engagement How To’s: • Focus on Development !!! – Eliminate punitive performance review systems and replace them with an avenue for staff to truly develop. • Have Fun !! – It seems so simple, but work should be fun. This is how your Culture leads to your focus of Employee Engagement.

  14. Astounding Attitude !! • HR has to examine itself to see if it is “championing employees” or “keeping them in line.” • Stop “Putting out Fires” !! - We only have fires if we are reactive vs. proactive. Team Member situations are a fact of our role. • Address the “trolls” of your organization and get them out !! (With all credit to Scott Warrick – Troll Killer !!)

  15. Moving Magnificently !! • It is the OBLIGATION of every HR professional to move their Company forward !! • HR professionals must continue to develop themselves professionally both within their organizations and externally within their profession. • Again . . . if HR models this to the workplace, development HAS to occur.

  16. Moving Magnificently !! • Robert Quinn talks about the fact of “Deep Change” or “Slow Death” in his book “Building the Bridge As You Walk On It” • HR has to generate and initiate change in organizations !! • Get connected, Get connected, Get Connected !!

  17. Moving Magnificently !! • Getting connected outside of your organization is key to remaining passionate about HR !! • Join SHRM !! • Get your certification (PHR, GPHR, CEBS or SPHR) !! • Join your local HR Chapter !! • Join Linked In, Twitter, Facebook, etc. • Join the HR Net !!

  18. STAY PASSIONATE !! “Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail . . .” Ralph Waldo Emerson
