  1. VNNIC’s UPDATES ON IDN.VN MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS VIETNAM INTERNET NETWORK INFORMATION CENTER (VNNIC) Hanoi, Aug 2011

  2. CONTENTS • Milestone about IDN.vn • Statistics • Some obstacles • Policy for IDN.vn development (c) VNNIC 2008

  3. MILESTONES • 2001: VNNIC started working on IDN • 2003: VNNIC issued IDN.vn criteria which matched with IDN criteria approved by IETF later (RFC 3490, 3491, 3492) • 2004 – 2007: Provided trial IDN.vn registration service to public. • 2007: IDN.vn officially provided along with traditional domain name under dot VN. • 10th Jan 2011: Launching Sunrise period for IDN.vn • 28th Apr 2011: Open IDN.vn for public registration for free

  4. 4 STATISTICS • Sunrise period: from 10th Jan – 27th Apr 2011 • 28th Apr 2011: open for public registration • > 100,000 IDN.vn registered after 1 week (Only ~4,000 IDN.vn registered in previous period) (c) VNNIC 2008

  5. 5 OBSTACLES • Characters in Vietnamese language is Latin-based (with most of vowels and consonants in Alphabetical table) and different in some “accented characters” like: Ă, Â, Đ; Ệ, Ỹ… (besides Latin characters like A, B, C, D…). In short, Vietnamese look alike Latin language. • Many Vietnamese words can be easily understoodthough missing all “accents” in some special Vietnamese characters: Ex: ĐẠI HỌC BÁCH KHOA <=> DAI HOC BACH KHOA (non-accented) => it can be read in the right way like with full “accents” (c) VNNIC 2008

  6. 6 OBSTACLES • User’s habits: prefer using “non-accented” characters when typing • Using Vietnamese words without special accents ( using Latin characters only) is very popular on the Internet, especially in social Network Web or Forum. Even a whole letter written in that way (non-accented) is preferred to save time typing… • Some other problems existed as the nature of Vietnamese language that cause bad impact on IDN deployment: Vietnamese input methods using keyboard and input codes are different and complicated to many people… It’s much more complicated when typing in the address bar as no space accepted (key “Ctrl” used instead of “Space” bar) • HÒA & HOÀ:=> same words, same reading and meaning but different names in DNS (c) VNNIC 2008

  7. 7 POLICY FOR IDN.vn DEVELOPMENT • Marketing strategy: • Advantage of IDN: Clearer meaning than using “non accented” characters and even irreplaceable in case the words used to denote a name (of a person, product, place…) that the traditional domain can not do. • PR for .IDN.vn: Launching ceremony, Press Release… (series of articles, interview, talks already done… on Mass media, virtual social network) to draw attention. • Changing the habits of users: • Free use of IDN.vn (for few years) to attract the awareness of Internet community, especially young people => Good impact so far with huge amount of IDN • Some services added to IDN to be provided freely (Web, email, redirect…) to promote actual use of IDN (c) VNNIC 2008
