  1. EarthCube Roadmap for Creating the Semantic/Ontologic Infrastructure for the Geosciences A.Krishna Sinha, on behalf of the Semantics/Ontology Community Group Arlington , June 12-14, 2012

  2. WHO ARE WE ----- A community of scientists working on a service and data infrastructure that support domain experts and citizens in publishing, searching, reusing, and integrating information from heterogeneous sources. We provide expertise to create more intelligent metadata, document the body of knowledge within EarthCube, as well as reasoning services to foster interoperability. Current membership : 96 Workshop held in Arlington, April 30-May 1; Participants: 50 Report of Roadmap on line at http://earthcube.ning.com/group/semantics-and-ontologies Semantics/Ontology community Group

  3. Provide state of the art support in EarthCube for • * publishing • * retrieving • * reusing • * integrating • data and geo-information metadata through Semantic Web Technologies and Ontology-based systems. • Provide a semantically enhanced infrastructure for researchers, educators and citizen scientists to share, access, discover, integrate and model data leading to knowledge management PURPOSE OF THE GROUP

  4. Closing the gap between Geoscience research and education practices and Semantic Web Technologies state of the art research Mission: development (and adaptation) of methods and tools for data (and systems) interoperability while maintaining different viewpoints (semantic heterogeneity) OVERVIEW OF CHALLENGES

  5. EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC CHALLENGES IDENTIFIED by s/O Community Group • Recognize the heterogeneity associated with global data sets • Develop andorganize data and service ontologies to promote discovery and reuse • Ensure metadata standards and ontologies that are compatible with relevant standards (e.g., from FGDC, OGC, NIST, etc.) • Develop incentives for scientists, organizations and data centers to contribute data &expertise given an incrementally emerging framework • Deploy best practices for community conversations, engagement, motivation, creativity and consensus • Address limitations of semantic technologies, e.g., representing & reasoning with uncertainty, contradictions, defaults, temporal data, context, etc. • Lower the barrier to development and maintenance

  6. What do you conceive as your major roadblocks with regard to data and information associated with publishing retrieving reusing integrating in the EarthCube environment ? What would be an efficient way for you to be informed by us about the available methods and technologies from Semantic Web research? REQUIRED INPUT FROM COMMUNITY
